A gzip signature (1f 8b) routes the file through the gzip engine first: same CRC-verified guards, no duplicated logic. Listing never extracts: each entry is one header read, and extraction slices exactly one entry's bytes.

Names must fit the ustar name+prefix fields, longer names are refused with a reason (GNU/PAX long-name styles are read by the inspector but not written).

What this tool does not do
  • No symlinks, hard links, device nodes, FIFOs, or GNU sparse files. Listed with a named reason, never extracted.
  • No archive-in-archive recursion, no extraction outside the browser download, no permissions or timestamps written (deterministic headers).
  • No 7z or RAR: 7z needs a dependency intake that has not been approved; RAR is permanently out.
